Mantrana Rioja 2002 [Dec. 22nd, 2004|10:43 pm]
[Tags|, , , , ]

This is one of the boldest Rioja wines I have ever tasted. It was made by Telmo Rodriguez using a blend of Grenacha and Temperanillo grapes. The oak flavor is particularly fierce, with the aftertaste smooth and silky. Don and I were impressed with it in the beginning, but the wine eventually got the better of us. I would be very curious to learn how such a heavy oak taste was imparted to such a young wine. As Don put it, "it's a bit like drinking a desk."
